Sheffield sacking, where do they go from here?

Sheffield United made the finals of the Championship play-offs last season. However, they narrowly lost out to Sunderland in the dying embers. And here we are only 113 days since the narrow loss, the Blades have lost all six games so far this campaign and have just sacked Spaniard Ruben Selles.

The dreadful start to the season has come as a shock for many. The club did some good business in the summer transfer window and looked to bounce back from the disappointment from the play-offs.

The future of Selles was decided after the 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Ipswich on Friday. If that wasn't enough ammo for the Sheffield United board to make a decision, the 14 goals conceded by the team in the first six games and absence of any goal threat since the first game subsequently led to his sacking.

In a shock couple of days for the club, it seems those at the top are looking for some familiarity. Former Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has emerged as the next managerial target for the club. If true, this will be Wilders' third spell at Bramall Lane.

If there's one man able to take the helm now to turn the fortunes, Chris Wilder would be the pick for the Blades. He gained the side promotion to the Premier League and other successful achievements in his time at the club.

Whatever manager comes through the door, will have to turn things around pretty quickly for United. As the leading pack roaring towards the Premier League are getting further away. And on the other side of the coin, the relegation zone is where they seem to be sticking for the time being. The fans will be looking for a response from the players also, they have looked inept of any ideas on how to progress and win games.

It has clearly been a sour start to the season for Sheffield United, but with the right manager and the right plan, they can put this awful start behind them. Start afresh and push for whatever is salvageable at this point. That all starts at home to Charlton Athletic on Saturday.

There won’t have been many times a manager goes back for a 3rd time! It’s a long way back after losing 5 in a row!
